Sangrur, December 17
Rebel SAD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has reportedly called a meeting of his supporters and other party leaders at his residence on Wednesday.
Local leaders are trying to convince party workers to boycott the meeting, while district SAD president Iqbal Singh Jhunda confirmed that those attending the meeting would face disciplinary action.
He said, “Since Dhindsa is involved in anti-party activities, we would deem all leaders attending his meeting guilty of the same offence.”
When asked that Dhindsa had not resigned from the party as yet and he was still SAD Rajya Sabha MP, Jhunda said since Dhindsa had been challenging Sukhbir Badal and issuing anti-party statements, he had no authority to call a meeting. “We would call a meeting on Thursday and felicitate Sukhbir Badal for his re-election as party chief,” said Jhunda, who met some senior leaders of the district on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Dhindsa supporters have been trying to mobilise maximum number of party workers for their meeting. Some leaders, requesting anonymity, confirmed that they had received phone calls from SAD leaders to stay away from the meeting.
When contacted, Dhindsa said he had not called any meeting. “I am coming to Sangrur after a long time. Area leaders and workers want to meet me and I have agreed to it. No one can stop me from meeting them. Let them take whatever action they want,” said Dhindsa.
When asked if he has any plans to resign from the party, Dhindsa said he had no such plans. “Why should I resign? I have worked hard for the party. The leadership should understand that threats would not work as party workers are already dejected and want restoration of democracy in the party,” he added.
