Srinagar, August 21

As per the past practice, the Kashmir valley’s oldest school — Tyndale Biscoe — today held its annual ‘Dal Cross’ event.

An official statement said a large number of students from both junior and senior wings of the school participated in the event from the Nehru Park to the Nishat area of Dal Lake. The participants covered 5.5-km cross and 11 km re-cross distance by swimming to and fro from the Nehru Park to Nishat.

Minister for Horticulture Syed Basharat Bukhari flagged off the event early in the morning in the presence of principal Parvez Samuel Koul besides parents of the participants and the school administration.

Speaking on the occasion, Bukhari said events, like water sports, create an awareness among the younger generation about the importance of water bodies, besides enhancing individual’s physical and mental fitness.

Pertinently, Tyndale Biscoe School that was founded in 1880 is known for its extra-curricular activities, especially swimming, regatta, skiing, mountain climbing and camping.

Appreciating the school management for organising the event, he said conducting extra-curricular activities helped in exploring the talent, besides creating awareness about the significance of state’s natural resources and water bodies, particularly Dal Lake. Bukhari said other than physical and mental development, sports activities also help an individual to gain self-confidence, key to excel in any field of life. He said the sports also help in grooming youth and inculcate qualities required to become global leaders who can play a positive role in making a better society.
