Amritsar, February 20

Shwait Malik, member Rajya Sabha, shared progress of Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (SGRDJI) here on Wednesday. He claimed that the SGRDJI Airport was the fastest growing and the 20th busiest airport in the country in terms of daily scheduled operations. For the period intervening April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018, the airport has handled 23.2 million passengers which are 48.1 per cent higher than the previous year’s. The cargo income has been increased many times, he said.

The current apron is suitable for parking 14 aircrafts and one cargo aircraft. He announced that the aprons on airport would be increased to 24.

“Delhi airport is choking up these days. A lot of diversions have been noticed during adverse climatic conditions and Amritsar airport is equipped with Cat-IIIB lighting system for handling flights during low visibility. In order to provide better passenger convenience, development work, such as interior works at the first floor of terminal building to increase the passenger handling capacity, and projects like canopy in front of terminal building for visitors facilitations, additional cargo terminal, construction of balance portion of parallel taxi track to reduce runway occupancy time, expansion of terminal building are also planned,” added Malik.

“Capt Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu did not make any effort for the improvement of airport during their tenure as MPs from Amritsar. I have made efforts and now getting results,” he added.
