Amritsar, October 13

In a significant move, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has asked drivers and owners of e-rickshaw to register their vehicles.

The Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority, Darbara Singh, gave the directions at a meeting with stakeholders, agencies and union of e-rickshaw held recently. The state government has exempted e-rickshaw form paying tax to promote pollution-free public transportation. E-rickshaw owners can get a registration number by paying fee of around Rs4,000 which includes hypothecation fee, smart card fee, RC fee and MVI fee.

There are only a few hundred e-rickshaws registered with the RTA till date. Meanwhile, the RTA officials claimed that more than 2,000 e-rickshaws were plying on city roads.

RTA officials stated that the department would soon start a massive checking drive and impound e-rickshaws without necessary documents.
