Amritsar, February 29
A youth was shot at in Islamabad area in broad daylight here on Thursday. The youth was seriously injured. An old enmity is stated to be the reason behind the incident.
The injured was identified as Amanpreet Singh (27) and the accused as Navpreet Singh, a resident of Kot Khalsa area, who fled the spot after the incident. The injured was admitted to the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Civil Hospital for treatment.
Senior police officials led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr Darpan Ahluwalia and Assistant Commissioner of Police Surinder Singh reached the spot and started a probe.
A preliminary probe revealed that the accused allegedly had an affair with the victim’s wife before their marriage. The accused wanted her to leave her husband. He had allegedly been threatening Amanpreet for the past some time. Finding an opportunity today, he shot at him, said the police.
Surinder Kaur, an aunt of the victim, said Amanpreet had suffered two bullet injuries — one at a shoulder and another in the stomach. She said he was going to give food to a relative at Government TB hospital on the Mall Road when the accused intercepted and shot at him. Amanpreet was married around six months ago.
“He returned home while bleeding and told the family members that Navpreet had shot at him. Immediately, an ambulance was called and the police were informed. He was admitted to the Civil Hospital,” she said.
ACP Surinder Singh said Amanpreet’s wife allegedly had a relationship with the accused before her marriage and the accused wanted her to leave Amanpreet. He said the police were conducting raids to nab the suspect who has been evading arrest. He said the accused would be arrested soon and a case has been registered by the Islamabad police.
The family members of the victim said the accused had been threatening him and they had informed the police about this but nothing was done.
