1 held for fake hallmarking

AMRITSAR: A team of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) from Chandigarh, in association with local police, conducted a raid in the holy city and arrested a person allegedly for illegally hallmarking gold articles.

A team of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) from Chandigarh, in association with local police, conducted a raid in the holy city and arrested a person allegedly for illegally hallmarking gold articles.

In a statement issued here today, Deputy Director General AK Sharma said the raid was conducted at Jaiditi Testing Centre located at Hari Ram Market. Its owner Rakesh Kumar was arrested.

He said the six member team of the BIS, in association with the local police, conducted the raid. A lazer hallmarking machine, a laptop and hallmarked jewellery were seized from the shop. He said the BIS would file a case in the court against the illegal firm and would submit the evidence.

Strict action would also be taken against the jewelers who were getting the hallmarking done from illegal centres. He said the owners running centres without BIS recognition may be fined up to Rs 50,000 or imprisoned up to one year.
