Around 12 passengers got injuries as a bus of Punjab Roadways overturned near Rayya on Friday afternoon.

Bus driver Ranjit Singh claimed that he suffered a heart attack following which he lost control over the bus but police officials suspect that he either dozed off or was under the influence of some drug.

The bus, which was coming from Chandigarh, belongs to the Amritsar Depot-2. Around 50 passengers were traveling in the bus. After crossing Rayya, the bus driver suddenly lost control over the bus and it overturned on the roadside. The incident happened at around 8 am.

Around 12 persons are said to have sustained injuries. Among the injured are Jhilmil Singh of Kharar, Lakhwinder Singh of Mohali, Daljit Kaur of Maksoodan, Jasbir Kaur of Kharar and Bhajan Singh.

Kirandeep Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Beas police station, said, “The injured were given first aid and discharged from the hospital. No one was critically hurt. The bus driver left from Amritsar at 5 pm on Thursday and reached Chandigarh at 12:30 am. He started the journey from Chandigarh on 3:20 am. We suspect that he dozed off.” According to him, the medical examination of the driver would be conducted and appropriate action would be taken.
