The police have booked five persons for beating up a doctor and misbehaving with his wife and mother on Mall Road here on Sunday night.

The suspects have been identified as Rajbir Singh, alias Ansul; Sarbjit Singh and Jatinder Singh, alias Billu, both residents of Joshi Colony; Deepakpal, a resident of Kennedy Avenue; and Satinderpal Singh, a resident of Kashmir Avenue. Of them, Sarbjit and Jatinder have been arrested.

The victim, Dr Gaurav, along with his family, was in the Mall Road area for having dinner when the incident took place. When they reached outside a restaurant, an SUV was reportedly parked haphazardly.

Dr Savita, wife of Dr Gaurav, stated in her complaint to the Civil Lines police that they reached Mall Road around 7.15 pm. She said, “The accused were sitting inside the SUV, which was parked outside the restaurant. My husband blew the horn and sought space to park the car. One of the accused alighted from the SUV and started arguing with us over the horn. Meanwhile, other persons inside the SUV also exchanged arguments and started thrashing Dr Gaurav.”

Dr Savita said the accused damaged their car with a baseball bat. A passerby intervened in the matter and tried to pacify the accused, but they beat him up as well. The victim family said when the police were called, the accused fled the spot.

A case under Sections 307, 323, 341, 355, 382, 427, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered. After examining CCTV footage, the police arrested Sarbjit and Jatinder, while others are still absconding.

ASI Rajinder Singh, in charge, police post, Lawrence Road, said, “We have registered a case of attempt to murder on the statement of the doctor’s family. The remaining suspects will be arrested soon.”
