27 nominations rejected, 582 candidates in field

AMRITSAR: After the filing of nominations, the district administration today scrutinised the papers of aspirants. Out of 609 candidates, district electoral officials rejected the nomination papers of 27 for various reasons.

After the filing of nominations, the district administration today scrutinised the papers of aspirants. Out of 609 candidates, district electoral officials rejected the nomination papers of 27 for various reasons. Now, 582 candidates are in the field. However, tomorrow is the last date to withdraw the candidatures. The final list of candidates will be issued on December 8 evening. The elections for the 85 Municipal Corporation wards will be held on December 17.

According to information, the elections will be conducted on the electronic voting machines (EVMs). There’s 50 per cent reservation for women. The State Election Commission has deputed eight Returning Officers for the elections in the city. Officials said the expenditure limit for the candidates for corporations is Rs 2.50 lakh. The voters, who are 18 years of age on January 1, 2017, are already enlisted as voters.

Meanwhile, District Electoral Officer Kamaldeep Singh Sangha and Commissioner of Police SS Srivastava conducted a meeting with the officials of the police and the district administration to conduct peaceful elections in the city. The election observers, Manjit Singh Narang and Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, were also present at the meeting. The officials held a discussions about the sensitive booths.

Sangha stated the administration was committed to conduct the elections peacefully, so everyone could cast his vote without any fear. The Police Commissioner assured the people of foolproof arrangements for the elections. Srivastava also reviewed the security arrangements.
