Despite losing the contest, the two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates, who quit their cushy government jobs, have no repentance. A former Excise and Taxation Officer, Harbhajan Singh, quit his PCS career to fight from the Jandiala seat whereas Jaswinder Singh Jahagir contested the Attari seat after he resigned from a government teacher’s job.

Both say they would continue with their mission of bringing reforms in society.

Harbhajan Singh joined the Excise and Taxation Department in in the Amritsar district in 2012. Before clearing the PCS, Harbhajan worked as a teacher. He claimed that after joining the duty he felt that corruption was a major issue in the system, which officials were unable to root out, due to political intervention.

“My area is deprived of basic facilities. I have chosen AAP as the party worked a lot on health and education in Delhi. I used to do social service while serving as government teacher. I have no repentance after my defeat as I am not in the politics for any benefit. I will carry on with my mission,” said Harbhajan.

“I will continue teaching for earning income. I welcome victory of the Congress. I will support them for work in health and education,” he added.

Similarly, Jaswinder Singh Jahangir said he had no repentance of losing in elections. He said, “I am habitual of taking up fight against establishments. We teach students about Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Did Bhagat Singh think about his career?”

“I have struggled against deployment of teachers on contractual basis. I welcome the mandate and will continue serving society,” he added.

However, people had hopes from the new ideology of AAP, but candidates fielded by the party failed to win even a single seat in the Majha region. Several candidates, who were enjoying comforts of their lives, contested for the party but lost in the poll.
