Amritsar, December 15

The Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted a local resident Sunny, alias Ghoga, in a nine-year-old murder case.

However, the high court has upheld the life imprisonment of another accused Roshan, alias Roshi.

Sunny was awarded life imprisonment in the case pertaining to the murder of a taxi driver Avtar Singh in 2009.

Vishal Handa, advocate for Sunny, said an Amritsar court convicted the two for murder in 2012 and they were sentenced to life imprisonment. Handa said in 2012, he filed an appeal in Sunny’s case which was heard this year. Agreeing with all arguments stated in the appeal, a Bench of Justice AB Chaudhari and Justice Kuldeep Singh found no evidence against Sunny and acquitted him of all charges.

Sunny said he had full faith in the judiciary and after a long battle, he finally got justice.

In August 2009, Roshi, along with his accomplice, had hired a taxi for Kashmir. The Kashmir police found the taxi at a secluded place while Avtar Singh was missing. When he did not return, his brother Sukhchain filed a complaint with the Chheharta police. Avatar’s body was found at a ditch in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Amritsar police caught Roshan and Sunny together and sent them to jail. Sunny pleaded that he was not part of the murder and was only arrested because Roshi was known to him.
