Residents have high expectations from those who will be elected councillors and say they should work towards providing basic civic amenities.

Sanjiv Kumar, a resident, said, “The process of setting up a solid waste management plant was unnecessarily dragged for so long, denying citizens a sophisticated garbage disposal system. The civic authorities in many parts of the country and around the world are shifting dumping ground out of the town. The previous government insisted to install the same at Bhagtanwala, which is situated in the town. We seek from all political parties to public their plans to shift the plant out of the city.”

Surinder Singh, a resident of the walled city, said door-to-door garbage lifting was initiated in the entire city except the walled city.

He said it forced them to throw garbage on the roadside, thereby further narrowing already congested roads.

Surinder added that it was their concerted demand that the door-to-door garbage collection must be introduced in the internal parts of the city.

NS Gabaria, a senior citizen, said, “Street lights and traffic lights are mandatory to commute on roads without any inconvenience. These two things never work properly. After several years, the civic authorities have failed to evolve a system to swiftly correct the faults and carry out repairs. Many traffic lights at intersections remain out of order or function out of sync, causing confusion among commuters. These can prove to be fatal on a number of occasions.”
