Five booked for firing at Shaurya Chakra awardee’s residence

Miscreants opened fire at the residence of a Shaurya Chakra awardee in Bhikhiwind, 35 km from here, on Sunday night. Balwinder Singh (60) has lodged a police complaint against five persons.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pooran Singh, investigating officer (IO), said the accused were identified as Balraj Singh Bobby, Jagroop Singh, Gurpartap Singh, Gurbhej Singh and Lovepreet Singh. Further investigation has been initiated.

Balwinder Singh, who has been awarded Shaurya Chakra for fighting against militants, mentioned in his police complaint that the accused had been threatening him for long. He said they fired at his residence when he was about to sleep. The accused came to his house in two SUVs. He said the family members escaped by hiding themselves in the house.

Pargat Singh Jamarai, state leader of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI), and others have condemned the incident and demanded early arrest of the accused. The Bhikhiwind police have registered a case under Sections 336, 148, 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act.
