Amritsar, February 23

The Municipal Corporation (MC) kicked off online services for birth and death certificates here today. This will bring transparency and efficiency in procuring the document. Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu said the process would ensure instant issuance of birth and death registration online. He said the plan was to gradually make all record here dating back to 1980 available online in two years or so.

He anticipated that it would reduce the rush of manual applications by almost 30 per cent. The manpower and resources could be used to properly handle the old cases.

According to the provisions of the Right to Service Act, the office is required to furnish the birth and death certificate to applicants within seven days but due to a huge rush, the applicants often complain of delay in issuing the certificates.

Now, the applicants would be able to get the first copy free of cost and for further copies they will have to shell out some money.

He said the death records from Shivpuri and Shaheeda Sahib cremation grounds would also be available in manual form as well as online.

The records from these cremation groups would be uploaded online after getting registered from these places.
