Popular stars of Punjabi films Jaspinder Cheema, Gurjeet Singh and Sandeep Singh Sunny came together to perform a comedy play, ‘Kissa Viyah Da’, at the Punjab Naatshala. The musical and visually enriching play was entertaining and experimental as it was for the first time that actors from Punjabi silver screen performed on stage.

Based on the institution of marriage, the play highlighted the journey that a young couple begins by getting married and the ups and downs they face afterwards. Each situation was complemented with peppy music. Song and dance routine, giving something new to the theatre audience.

Cheema, who was seen in film ‘Ek Kudi Punjab Di, said such experiments were required to bring in fresh ideas into theatre scene.

“People love their theatre here, but they also crave for innovation. It’s a first attempt by actors to amalgamate the ethics of theatre and cinema together to do something different. We loved the response from the audience and would definitely try to do it again.”

She stressed that such experiments would help promote theatre among young audience. “The young audience usually prefers movies over theatre, so why not give them an experience that brings the best of both. It is important to constantly reinvent theatre just like films.”

The play was directed by Kashish Devgan and written by Sanjiv Chaudhary, who also wrote lyrics for the play.

Jatindra Brar, playwright and owner of the Punjab Natshala, also appreciated the efforts made by young actors and said he would always support new concepts in theatre promotion as long as the audience loves them.
