Sportsmen honoured

AMRITSAR: Six sports personalities were awarded during the 27th Kamaljit Khedan-2017 held at Kotla Shahia village today. During the four-day sporting event, more than 1,500 sportspersons from different states of northern parts of the country participated in eight sports disciplines, including athletics, football, hockey, volleyball, netball, kabaddi national style, kabaddi circle style.

Six sports personalities were awarded during the 27th Kamaljit Khedan-2017 held at Kotla Shahia village today. During the four-day sporting event, more than 1,500 sportspersons from different states of northern parts of the country participated in eight sports disciplines, including athletics, football, hockey, volleyball, netball, kabaddi national style, kabaddi circle style.

Former Indian Hockey team captain and Olympian Harpreet Singh Mander was awarded with Surjit Memorial Award, Arjuna Awardee Volleyball player Sukhpal Singh Pali with Shaheed Major Vajinder Singh Shahi Punjab Da Gaurav Award, athletics coach Sukhdev Singh Pannu with Majhe Da Maan award, international athlete Kulwinder Kaur with Kamaljit Memorial Award, World Youth Athletics Meet Silver medalist Damneet Singh with Harjit Brar Bajakhana Memorial Award, and Sher-E-Punjab Boxing Academy, Chakar (Ludhiana) village, was given Amarjit Singh Grewal Memorial Award.

These sportspersons were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 21,000 each along with a citation and a trophy.

Rural Development and Panchayats and Water Sanitation Minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa awarded the sportspersons on the occasion. He also announced Rs 5 lakh for the development of sports infrastructure.

Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill, chairman, Surjit Sports Association, said Kamaljit Khedan was the only mega sporting event of the country where books worth more than Rs 1.5 lakh were given to winners as prizes along with cash prizes. The main aim of giving books as prizes is because along with sports culture, the Surjit Sports Association also wants to promote book culture in the state.
