Efficient firefighting system sought

After a fire incident, in which garments worth crores of rupees were gutted in a Chabal showroom, residents want the administration to strengthen its firefighting system. According to information, fire engines had taken around two hours to reach the site in Chabal. Area residents had swung into action and tried to control the fire. They say that it was due to their efforts the fire didn't spread further.

They say that fire engines from Tarn Taran and Amritsar reached the spot more than two hours after the incident. There was no water arrangement so the authorities of Gurdwara Beer Baba Budha Sahib Thatha provided water on its own expenditure.

No administrative authority has visited the spot till now to prepare a report and recommend proper arrangements to deal with such incidents in future, residents rue.

Social activists Devinder Sohal and his wife Seema Sohal, who visited the spot, said, "Had area residents not come forward, the situation could have gone worse. Village-level committees should be formed to deal with such incidents and the panelists must be given training."

Besides, another case, wherein an ultrasound centre was sealed for reportedly carrying out sex determination tests, has infuriated the residents. Punjab Ultrasound and Scan Centre, situated in front of the civil surgeon's office, faced action recently. Residents say the officials must be cautious to curb such illegal activities. The authorities concerned of the civil hospital had faced a lot criticism last year as well when a state-level report had found that medical officers in a planned way were recommending certain medicines to be purchased from certain medical stores to patients. Further investigation has not been completed by the government yet.

Students' good performance

A number of schools in the district have recorded good outcome as the results of different education boards have been released recently. Jaswant Singh Khalsa, chairman of Dashmesh Privar International School, Aima Kalan, said the school got cent per cent pass percentage in CBSE Class XII results. Komalpreet Kaur scored 95% marks, Gurbinder Kaur 92.8% and Mandeep Kaur got 86.8% marks.

Gurdeep Kaur, Principal of Guru Nanak Dev Academy, Noordi Road, and Raman Dua, Principal, Majha Public School, said their schools' pass percentage was cent per cent.

Same is the case with Guru Amar Das Adarsh Institute (CBSE Class X), Goindwal Sahib, Mata Sahib Kaur Modern Secondary School (CBSE Class X), Bharowal, Sant Baba Suba Singh Sardar Hari Singh Senior Secondary School, Nandpur, Guru Gobind Singh Convent School, Sohawa (Sarhali), Pineland School, Gaggo Bua, and Baba Deep Singh Public School, Dehra Sahib.
