The state Health Department has decided to introduce a full-fledged burn unit at the civil hospital in Bathinda. Punjab Health System Corporation (PHSC) has sanctioned Rs 1.40 crore for the unit that will have ultra-modern facilities. The project got the final nod during a meeting held at the Health Department head office in which officials from the district unit of the department participated.

The officials said maps for the project had been sanctioned. Moreover, the Health Department would also renovate the trauma centre, blood bank and the emergency and set up a new mortuary at the hospital. The proposal for the renovation work had been passed but funds had not been released by the state Health Department. The officials at the local unit of the department said it may take some more time before the renovation work is started.

A department official said the services at the government hospital suffered owing to staff shortage and lack of adequate infrastructure but with the renovation work and a full-fledged burn unit at the hospital, the situation was likely to improve.

With the establishing of the burn unit, the patients injured critically in accidents would get proper and immediate treatment. The patients would not have to visit other government hospitals (situated out of the district) or private hospitals.

Notably, there is a burn unit at the civil hospital, but owing to unavailability of ventilator facility, patients have to be referred to other hospitals after administration of first-aid treatment.

Dr Satish Goyal, Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, said “We had moved a proposal to introduce a burn ward to the engineering wing of the PHSC and the corporation has given a nod for the same. The construction work for the unit building is expected to start soon.”
