Aiming to rein in the instances of wrong parking, especially by buses outside the bus stand, the district traffic police department has begun issuing challans to erring drivers. The department has issued almost 10 such challans for stopping buses at the gate of the bus stand to pick passengers.

SP (Traffic) Gurmeet Singh said the department had first held a meeting with the bus stand authorities and also made bus drivers aware that stopping the bus just outside the bus stand to allow passengers to board the bus was not allowed.

“We had been receiving repeated complaints from commuters and drivers of other private vehicles sating that the bus drivers cared two hoots about the traffic rules and stopped the buses as per their whim and fancy. It was common to see that the drivers stopped the vehicles at several points on the roads to let the passengers in and this lead to traffic jams and even accidents as the buses would halt suddenly,” a traffic police personnel said.

Following the drive started by the department, the instances of wrongful stoppages of buses have dwindled. “We will continue to keep a tab on erring drivers who flout traffic rules. Further action will also be taken against frequent offenders,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, a workshop on School Vahan Safety was organised for drivers and conductors in Delhi Public School. The members of social welfare organization Yadwinder Singh and Jaswant Singh acquainted drivers with various traffic rules and safety norms. As many as 60 drivers and conductors participated in the workshop. Transport in-charge of the school Paramjeet Singh also attended the workshop. The school authorities stated that such workshops were conducted regularly in the school to ensure safety of students.
