Malout, January 18

Overloaded tractor-trollies are posing a threat to commuters on the Malout-Muktsar highway. Notably, a number of mishaps have occurred in the past here, but the officials concerned are yet to wake up from deep slumber.

A large number of overloaded vehicles remain stationed outside a mill at Rupana village, but neither the traffic police nor the SDM has initiated any action in this regard.

The situation goes worse in the night when there is no traffic cop present on roads and drivers throw traffic norms to the wind. Motorists on this highway say that during the crop harvesting season, there is hardly any check on the violation of traffic rules.

In the last three days, three overloaded trollies overturned in Malout subdivision. Two such vehicles overturned near Aulakh village on the Malout-Muktsar highway on Friday. Another one overturned on the Bathinda chowk in Malout town on Wednesday.

Krishan Kumar, a social activist, said, “The situation is pathetic but cops are unable to take any action. The highway patrolling team or senior officials must take action so that innocent lives can be saved. This is the foggy season and overloaded vehicles are proving a threat to commuters.”
