Two brothers hailing from Lehri village were arrested by the Talwandi Sabo police on Wednesday for allegedly killing their maternal uncle Balwant Singh over a water dispute at the village. The accused have been identified as Jagsir Singh and Raghuvir Singh.

Their father Baldev Singh, who was also booked in the case, is absconding. A case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the trio on the complaint of deceased’s wife Gurmeet Kaur.

According to sources, the accused resorted to hooliganism in the village after assaulting Balwant Singh and openly admitted to having done the same. They also dared people to act against them.

The two families had been involved in the dispute for years and Balwant had once fired at Baldev’s worker, though he was acquitted in the case, said sources.

However, the dispute flared up again and the two sides were involved in a heated exchange of words.

Sunil Kumar, SHO of Talwandi Sabo police station, said Balwant and his wife Gurmeet were returning home on Tuesday when Baldev, along with his sons Jagsir and Raghuvir, stopped them outside the village and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons before managing to escape.

Balwant was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. Barinder Singh, DSP of Talwandi Sabo, said Raghuvir and Jagsir were arrested on Wednesday and both would be produced in the court on Thursday. Both accused confessed to their crime during preliminary interrogation, the DSP said.
