Patiala, December 9

Fulfilling one of the demands of the Sanjha Adhyapak Morcha, the Education Department cancelled the transfer of 96 SSA and RMSA teachers yesterday.

Rajinder Singh, official spokesperson of the Education Department, said, “In the first phase, we could cancel transfers of only 96 teachers. Due to panchayat elections, the model code of conduct has been imposed in the state. Therefore, the department will have to seek permission for the next step.” He added that since a majority of teachers had moved court, their transfer orders could be cancelled only after the cases were disposed of.

Davinder Punia, state convener of the Sanjha Adhyapak Morcha, said, “The move of revocation of transfers is as per the promise made to us. We hope the remaining transfer orders will be revoked soon.”

Teachers’ call off stir

The ongoing protest by a splinter group of teachers’ unions at Mehmadpur Grain Market was called off late on Saturday evening after an announcement was made that protest marches will be held in Ludhiana and Bathinda on December 16.
