Mohali, June 5

Farmer unions will stop their protest on Wednesday and will hold a meeting at Kisan Bhawan to decide the next course of action.

The nationwide protest, which started on June 1 for 10 days, has been cut short by the farmers in Punjab as they faced resistance from vegetable and milk sellers, who were asked to not to sell their produce. The latter did not agree with them as they were suffering losses.

The unions are demanding waiver of loans, right price for their crops and implementation of recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.

With farmers’ stir subdued, vegetable prices returned to normal on Tuesday. At a local mandi, tomatoes and potatoes were sold for Rs 20 per kg. Onions were available for Rs 50 for three kg.
