GMCH performs first cardiac surgery on infant

CHANDIGARH: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, on Tuesday conducted its first cardiac surgery procedure on a month-old child.



Chandigarh, June 12

The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, on Tuesday conducted its first cardiac surgery procedure on a month-old child. The surgery was conducted with the assistance of a PGI doctor.

As per the GMCH Director Principal, BS Chavan, the surgery lasted an hour and half. The condition of the child is stable. He said the infant was on ventilator since birth. “It was not possible to remove ventilator as his condition was very serious,” stated the Director.

As per the statement issued by the hospital, this was the first cardiovascular surgery, which was performed at the GMCH, thus assistance was sought from the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CTVS), PGI.

A senior faulty at the PGI, Dr Anand Mishra, was sent to the GMCH for assistance. Dr Sidharth Garg, who has recently joined the GMCH as an assistant professor in cardio thoracic vascular surgery, performed the surgery of ductus arteriosus closure.

The doctors said a lot of planning went into the procedure. Since the procedure required assistance from another institute, the Health Secretary was informed. — TNS
