Medicine mistaken for opium at counting centre

CHANDIGARH:The UT police were left surprised when a police official on security duty at the Sector 26 polling station made a call at the police control room to inform that opium had been recovered from a polling agent during frisking.

Chandigarh, May 23

The UT police were left surprised when a police official on security duty at the Sector 26 polling station made a call at the police control room to inform that opium had been recovered from a polling agent during frisking. Police officials after verifying the incident claimed that it was an ayurvedic medicine.

Sources said the cop who was on duty at gate number 1 of the Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET) found a small packet from a BJP’s polling agent during frisking.

Police teams, including the DSP (East) and the SHO at the Sector 26 police station, reached the spot. The polling agent was asked to come out of the counting centre for questioning.

Charanjit Singh, DSP (PRO), said after verifying with the polling agent, it was found that he suffered from breathlessness so he was carrying his medicine along.

The DSP said the statement of the polling agent, who was an advocate, was recorded. “He consumed the medicine with water at the same time after which he was allowed to enter the polling station,” he added. — TNS
