Municipal Corporation proposes starting of hourly parking system

CHANDIGARH: The Municipal Corporation has proposed to start hourly parking system in all 25 parking lots of the city. The aim behind introducing the hourly parking is to avoid congestion in the parking lots.

The Municipal Corporation has proposed to start hourly parking system in all 25 parking lots of the city. The aim behind introducing the hourly parking is to avoid congestion in the parking lots.

At present, the hourly parking system is being run in Sahib Singh and Empire Store automatic parking lots in Sector 17. Both the parking lots are automated. The proposal had come up for discussion in the recent MC House meeting but could not be discussed due to scuffle among councillors. Now, the issue will be come up for discussion at the House meeting on September 8.

The MC has proposed that for four-wheelers, Rs 10 will be paid for the first four hours and Rs 5 for every subsequent two hours. The MC has proposed that Rs 30 will be charged for the parking of four-wheelers up to 12 hours and for above 12 hours the MC will charge Rs 40.

Similarly for two-wheelers, Rs 5 will be charged for the first four hours. For upto 12 hours, the MC will charge Rs 17, and above 12 hours  Rs 20. At present, parking charges are Rs 2 for a two-wheeler and Rs 5 for four-wheelers. Besides, the MC has also proposed to start e-ticketing at all paid parking lots in Chandigarh. All the paid parking lots will be turned into automatic parking lots. The MC also proposed to start Smart Card for paid parking. The smart cards will be recharged by e-Sampark centres.
