The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed a chargesheet in the court against a Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Chandigarh Police in a bribery case.

According to information, SI Rajbir Singh, posted as additional SHO at the Sector 31 police station, was arrested on January 11, 2019, for demanding a bribe of Rs 15,000 from complainant Sita Ram, a resident of Ram Darbar, Industrial Area, Phase II, here.

In his complaint to the CBI on January 3, Sita Ram stated that he owns a meat shop in Hallo Majra and Shatrudhan, a resident of Hallo Majra, was working at his shop.

He stated that SI Rajbir Singh, Head Constable Mahabir and other police officials from the Sector 31 police station came to his shop around 9.30 pm on December 27, 2018, and took his employee to the police station. The SI informed the complainant that Shatrudhan was involved in a theft case.

Sita Ram said after some time, he received a call from the SI, who asked him to come to the police station.

On reaching the police station, the SI informed him that there were allegations of theft against Shatrudhan and he would have to interrogate him throughout the night and told him to come the next day.

When he went to the police station the next day, the SI told him that SHO Gurjeet Kaur was demanding Rs 15,000. If he was ready to pay the money, the case would not be registered against his employee.

In fear, he agreed to pay the bribe, he said. Thereafter, the SI took him to the SHO’s room where Rajbir told Gurjeet that he was ready to pay the money.

The complainant said as he could not pay the bribe, the SI and his subordinates used to visit his shop and the house daily and also called him on his mobile phone.

He said when the SI came to his shop on January 2, he gave him Rs 5,000 and told him to pay the remaining amount the next day.

On January 3, Sita Ram approached the CBI with a complaint against the SI. However, the telephonic conversation between Sita Ram and the SI substantiated the allegation of demanding bribe on part of the SI in the name of the SHO.

On January 4, the CBI had registered a case against the SI under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

To nab the SI red-handed, a CBI team was formed under Inspector SS Rathore and a trap was laid near the complainant’s shop. However, the SI came to the shop and collected the remaining money from the complaint. As the CBI team tried to nab him, he somehow managed to escape from the spot in his car and also tried to run over the CBI officials.

A separate case of attempt to murder was registered against him. However, he surrendered before the CBI on January 11. Since then, he has been lodged in the jail.
