In a freak accident, Ishaan Sharma, a student of Panjab University, who was pursuing his internship at the university’s Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, died on Saturday night. Ishaan was a former SFPU leader, who had recently joined hands with the SOI for the upcoming PUCSC elections. Rajeev Kumar, SHO at the Sector 11 police station, said Ishaan was under the influence of liquor. A complaint under Section 174 of the CRPC has been registered.

“He was walking towards the South Campus of the university. He was drunk and was not in a condition to walk. Two of his friends went after him and asked him to return, but he refused. He started punching a flex board where his hand got stuck. Struggling to pull it out with force, he fell back on his head. Ishaan was shifted to the GMSH-16 where doctors declared him brought dead,” he said.

“His post-mortem examination has been conducted. We are waiting for the reports,” he said.

Divulging more details on the incident, Prof Jagat Bhushan, newly appointed Dean Student Welfare and Principal of the Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, said: “It is unfortunate that such incident happened at the university. I was informed about it around 2:30 am, but the event, I was told, occurred around midnight. He was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Ishaan was an active student and used to participate in all sorts of extra-curricular activities.”

Following Ishaan’s death, several student parties cancelled their events scheduled for Sunday.

NSUI’s official Facebook page read: “Due to the sudden demise of PU student leader Ishaan Sharma of the BDS Department, the NSUI has cancelled all election campaigning activities for today. Our deep condolences to his family and friends. May god gives the strength to his family to bear this loss”.

INSO’s official page read: “This is to inform you all about the sad demise of young and dynamic student leader of Panjab University Dr Ishaan Sharma. He passed away on Saturday. Indian National Student Organisation (INSO) expresses heartfelt condolences to the family and joins their prayers for the deceased. May the Almighty take the departed soul to his heavenly abode and give strength and courage to his bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss. So, all political activities by the INSO are cancelled for Sunday (August 25).”

One of Ishaan’s friends took to social media and wrote: “With a heavy heart, I hereby inform you that our beloved leader Dr Ishaan Sharma of the BDS Department has died. He suffered a cardiac arrest around 11.40 pm on August 24 and was declared brought dead at the GMSH, Sector 16.” —TNS
