Overflow of sewerage water at the back side of Phul Cinema in Chhoti Baradari has become an unending inconvenience for residents and visitors.

Residents raise questions over the cleanliness efforts and initiatives taken by the Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC) which claims of having cleaned 80 per cent of sewerage system lines with super-suction machines.

Every day, gutters near a hospital and showrooms in the area are found overflowing. The waste which oozes out of the gutter flows onto the road towards showrooms and complexes. The dirty water not only halts traffic on the road, but also spreads foul smell in the area. The water the gets accumulated on the roadsides which are not cleaned for days on end and aggravates the problem.

On the one hand, officials in the corporation say the drains in the city are being cleaned, on the other hand, the problem has been prevailing for a long time.

Jagat, a cleaner in a private showroom, said the problem persists as the drains were not cleared on time.

A tea-stall owner in the area said: “This problem has affected my sale. People do not like eating or drinking in the area due to the foul smell. The authorities should get the area cleaned.”

Municipal Corporation (MC) officials said keeping in view the monsoon season, cleaning of drains in the city was started and the authorities had been successful in clearing almost 80 per cent of the drains in the city. An official in the Sewerage Department said: “We have cleaned most of the drains in the city with super suction machines. Work in the remaining areas will be completed soon.”
