The Nooran Sisters-Jyoti and Sultana-brought alive the mysticism of Sufi saints through an entrancing and energetic spell of Sufi kalams in the packed Tagore Theatre hall here today. The concert was organised by the LIC as part of its diamond jubilee celebrations. The programme commenced with the lighting of a lamp by chief guest Tajender Singh Luthra, DGP, Chandigarh.

The Nooran Sisters started their performance with invocatory Sufi couplets before doling out their hit numbers such as Nit khair manga ‘ and later ‘ Ghungat chak of Sajna’. The celebrated duo presented their popular numbers like ‘“Tung-tung baje”. Drifting from the serenity of the Sufiana lyrics they presented Punjabi and a few filmy numbers.

Musical jugalbandi

A jugalbandi of Pt Subhash Ghosh on swaragini and Jaipur-based Ustad Gulzar Hussain on violin thrilled the audience during a concert, “Strings of Harmony”, organised by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi at Tagore Theatre on Tuesday. Subhash Ghosh and Ustad Gulzar Hussain are the foremost disciples of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and the legendary Pt VG Jog, respectively.

The duo opened the performance with Raga Yaman through a short alap before presenting two compositions in gayaki ang by weaving intricate musical phrases with lyakari and intonation. Thereafter, they reflected the nuances of Raga Kirwani in a composition, “Chithi na koi sandesh”, as a tribute to victims violence on the border and railway accidents. The duo concluded the recital with a popular bandish “Ekla chalo re”. Avirbhav Verma and Rajnish Kumar accompanied them on tabla along while Manish Kumar on keyboard.
