Chandigarh, August 10

In a relief to residents, the Chandigarh Transport Department has asked the traffic police to accept vehicle papers uploaded on DigiLocker, an initiative of the Union Government to store documents online.

Sources said now the documents downloaded from DigiLocker would be considered equal to original documents issued by the Transport Department. A senior official at the Transport Department said it would come as a huge relief to residents as many time the traffic policemen and transport officials insist on scrutinising original documents.

DigiLocker is a digital repository of documents issued to people. It has been linked to their Aadhaar number. The mobile-based application, which is available on Google Store and iOS platforms, allows people to produce their driving licence and emission certificate from their digital account.

Papers uploaded on DigiLocker are mandated as original documents under the IT Act, 2010. Arjun Sharma, Director, Information Technology, said they had asked the Transport Department to direct the police to accept documents uploaded on DigiLocker.
