Chandigarh, February 12

The engineering department of the UT Administration has started the work of making all roundabouts in the city cycle-friendly.

Sources said initially, the work has begun on 13 roundabouts at the cost of approximately Rs 16 crore. The Administration is replicating the model of the Sector 26 roundabout, the first cycle-friendly rotary constructed on pilot basis in 2016.

Sources said after getting a positive response to the model, the UT traffic police had recommended to the Administration to replicate the model at other roundabouts where the traffic flow was an issue.

Mukesh Anand, Special Secretary of the engineering department, said all roundabouts in the city would be connected with cycle tracks being laid under the Smart City project. He added that the project was also a part of intelligent traffic and safety management system.

The cycle track and the pedestrian path will be constructed along all four roads leading to the roundabouts by laying paver blocks. Coloured paver blocks will be laid to give a separate identity to cycle tracks, just like the Sector 26 roundabout.

The Department of Architecture has already submitted drawings of cycle tracks at all major roads — Jan Marg, Madhya Marg, Udyog Path, Dakshin Marg and Vigyan Path.
