85 cases of liquor seized 

Mohali: The police have seized 85 cases of illicit liquor from a Bolero pick-up here. The liquor was being smuggled by two persons, who managed to flee, leaving their vehicle, bearing a Ludhiana registration number, behind.  The liquor was meant for sale in Chandigarh only, said the police. TNS

Man held with 22-kg poppy husk

Dera Bassi: The police arrested a person and recovered 22 kg of poppy husk from him at a naka near here on Wednesday. The suspect has been identified as Karnail Singh of Jawaharpur. The police said acting on a tip-off, a naka was laid near Bhushan Factory, Dera Bassi. The suspect, who was coming in an i20 car, was signalled to stop for checking. The police recovered 22-kg poppy husk from him and arrested him. The suspect has been sent to two-day police remand. OC

Two arrested in assault cases

Ambala: The police have arrested two persons in separate cases of assault and threatening local residents with dire consequences. According to the police, Opinder Singh of Mahesh Nagar was arrested on the complaint of Rohit Kumar of Mahesh Nagar, who told the police that the suspect, along with his accomplices, including a woman, had waylaid him, thrashed and threatened him with dire consequences on August 26. The suspect was produced before a local court, which released him on bail. In a separate case, Sahil, alias Jimmy, of Ambala Cantonment was arrested on the complaint of a local woman, who had accused him of trespassing into her house, assaulting her and threatening her with dire consequences on August 26. The suspect was sent to 14-day judicial custody. TNS

Travel Agent held for fraud

Ambala: The police have arrested a travel agent, Gurvinder Singh of Barara, in two separate cases of immigration fraud registered against him, officials said. According to the police, Harjit Singh and Namjeet Singh of Barara had complained to the police that the suspect had taken huge money from them on the pretext of sending them abroad but neither he kept his promise nor returned their money. The suspect was produced before a court, which sent him to 14-day judicial custody. TNS

Driver steals wheat bags, held

Ambala: The police have arrested a truck driver, Tej Raj, alias Raju, of Ambala Sadar and claimed to have recovered 12 bags of stolen wheat from him, officials said here on Wednesday. According to the police, Baldev Singh of Ambala City reported to the police on August 17 that the suspect had stolen 12 bags of wheat from his truck from near the railway station bridge. The suspect will be produced before a local court on Thursday. TNS

PO lands in police net

Ambala: The district police have arrested a proclaimed offender, Om Parkash of Mahesh Nagar, who was wanted in a criminal case registered against him, officials said here on Wednesday. According to the police, the suspect was evading arrest ever since he was booked in a criminal case following which he was declared a proclaimed offender by a court. He was produced before a court, which sent him to 14-day judicial remand. TNS

14-year-old girl among 3 missing

Ambala: A 14-year-old girl was among three persons who were reported missing from their respective homes, the police said here on Wednesday. According to information, Joginder Singh of Parav had reported to the police that his 14-year-old niece had been missing from her home since August 24. Similarly, Karnail Singh (22) of Mahesh Nagar and Prem Kumar (26) of Parav had reportedly been missing from their respective homes since August 21 and 25, respectively. TNS

Elderly man commits suicide

Kharar: An elderly farmer, Raghbir Singh, a resident of Siamimpur village near Mullanpur Garibdass, allegedly committed by consuming some poisonous substance. Mullanpur Garibdass SHO Bhagwant Singh said the police had proceeded under Section 174 of the CrPC. He said as per the statement recorded by his family members, he was dealing in the sale and purchase of cattle and was under stress. oc

Man loses Rs 50K in online fraud

Zirakpur: A Dhakoli resident became the victim of online fraud when Rs 50,000 was siphoned off from his bank account. Victim Sant Ram alleged that he went to PNB ATM to withdraw money. When he could not go through the transaction process properly, the suspects, who were already inside the ATM, approached him and offered him help in withdrawing the amount. But even they too could not go through the transaction process and returned his card back. As per the complaint, the victim received messages on his phone that Rs 50,000 had been withdrawn from his account through different transactions. The victim claimed that the fraudsters returned him another ATM card instead of his card. A case has been registered. OC

Asst prof bags project

Patiala: An assistant professor at Punjabi University has bagged a project for preparation of people’s biodiversity registers of Patiala district and Sirhind and Dhuri blocks in Fatehgarh Sahib and Sangrur districts, respectively, from the Punjab Biodiversity Board. Dr Onkar Singh Brraich has bagged the third such project. TNS
