A 45-year-old Delhi Police Head Constable sustained grave head injuries when he was hit by a speeding SUV near the Khel Gaon flyover in east Delhi, where he was on duty at a barricade on Friday night.
The victim, Raghu Nandan, is posted at the Pandav Nagar police station in east Delhi. He was taken to the Max Balaji hospital in Patparganj by two constables who were also on duty with him. Until Saturday, Nandan's condition was critical.
The SUV, a white Renault Duster, with a Delhi number-plate was being driven by a youth, who was allegedly drunk. Identified as Siddhant Kashyap, he has been arrested.
The incident took place at about 12.50 am when the SUV driver was signalled by the policemen to stop, according to the police. The driver instead stepped on the accelerator and rammed the vehicle into the barricade, injuring Nandan.
Kashyap was arrested immediately. He was booked for rash and negligent driving. He is a resident of east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar. The other occupant of the car, an 18-year-old youth named Manish Bajaj, was also allegedly drunk, according to the police.
Last Sunday, two Delhi Police officials were killed and one was seriously injured in a similar incident. They had tried to stop a taxi near a picket at Kalindi Kunj in south-east Delhi, but the driver rammed into the barricades, killing the two policemen and injuring another.
On Thursday night, a Sub-Inspector, posted at Bhalswa Dairy police station in north-west Delhi, died after his motorcycle was hit by an overloaded truck in the Alipur area on the outskirts of Delhi.
