Lt. Governor Anil Baijal approved the PWD proposals on constructing an underground tunnel below ITPO (Pragati Maidan), signal-free corridor from Modi Mill flyover to IIT Delhi, extension of Ashram flyover, among a number of major projects.

The decisions were taken at 54th governing body meeting of the Unified Traffic Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) committee.

The LG approved the proposals for connectivity of Mathura Road to Ring Road through underground tunnel below ITPO (Pragati Maidan), along with underground U-turns on Mathura Road.

Short-term plan to decongest the Najafgarh area that includes a one-way traffic circulation around Phirni Road along with Non Motorized Vehicles (NMV) lanes has also been approved. The proposal to develop corridor of GT Road from Old Yamuna Bridge to Apsara Border was given a priority.

The LG also cleared the proposal for extension of Ashram flyover up to DND flyover.

Multi-modal integration of the six existing Metro stations--Shastri Nagar, Jahangirpuri, Karol Bagh, New Delhi, Dwarka Mor, Nehru Place--to provide the last-mile connectivity for pedestrians has also been cleared.

The Lt. Governor stressed that traffic projections should be carefully reviewed.

He favoured better traffic engineering solutions that help in removing chokepoints at the traffic-merging locations.

He also stressed giving importance to the pedestrians and cyclists in the scheme of things. Other features such as provision of stack parkings in place of brick-and-mortar parking complexes, street furniture, landscaping, etc were also emphasized.
