New Delhi, April 25

A 19-year-old woman, along with her two friends Vikas (19) and Akshay (20), has been arrested for allegedly stealing cash and jewellery worth around Rs 7.5 lakh from her house, said a police official today. The girl committed the crime to fulfil her dream of becoming a model.

On April 16, the woman offered her mother a glass of milk, laced with sedatives, a senior police officer said.

"Since her mother has the habit of waking up even at the slightest noise, the woman mixed sleeping pills in the glass of milk. Her father and brother were sleeping on another floor of the house," the officer said.

When her mother fell asleep after drinking it, the woman took out Rs 3.08 lakh cash from a cupboard and jewellery, comprising gold bangles, earrings and nosepins, from the locker after opening it with a screwdriver, the officer said, adding she handed over the booty to her two friends.

Her father Sahib Singh filed a complaint about theft in his house. There was no sign of forced entry. Neither was the cupboard found broken nor was the house ransacked. Due to these clues, the police suspected it to be the handiwork of a family member.

During the course of investigation it was found that Singh’s daughter, a Class XII student, has a passion of modeling. Investigation of the case carried out from all the angles. On the basis of information accused Vikas, one of her accomplices, was apprehended last night from his house in Karawal Nagar.

He was thoroughly interrogated and he said complainant’s daughter is passionate about modeling, but her family members were not supporting her so she being a friend asked Vikas and Akshay to help her.

On April 16, they made a plan and as per planning of accused woman stole money and gold articles from her house. She then handed over the stolen articles to Vikas and Akshay.

When the woman was interrogated, she said a friend had told her that she needs to arrange Rs 6 lakh to realise her modelling dreams, said DCP Dr Ajit Kumar Singla (Northeast).

Following this her other friend, also an accomplice in the theft was also arrested, the officer said. The police are also likely to question the woman's friend who had told her to arrange Rs 6 lakh. The stolen cash and jewellery have been recovered, police said. TNS/PTI
