Lack of awareness and concern among residents of rural and suburban areas about eye health care and nutrition were identified as main factors behind major eye ailments, including myopia and hypermetropia.

This was observed by a team of ophthalmologists after examining around 800 persons at an eye camp organised by the local unit of Punjab Mahavir Dal Shri Sanatan Dharam Parcharak Sabha at Bajrang Akhara Hospital here on Sunday.

The camp was organised in the memory of founder of Shryans Group of Industries DK Oswal. Rajneesh Oswal, chairman and managing director, was the chief guest during the event inaugurated by chief patron Nirmal Oswal.

Dr Pooja Gupta and Dr Nidhi Bansal said a majority of patients examined by their teams had ignored the eye health care and were unaware of constituents of nutritious diet.

“A majority of patients paid little attention to nutritional constituents required for optimum vision, besides ignoring proper hygiene and care of eyes,” they said.

As many as 180 patients were admitted for implantation of intraocular lenses. The organisers provided medicines and spectacles to the patients and meals to their attendants free of cost.
