Banking on rankings

The rank of a college is a key deciding factor for students as well as parents and it is even common for students to change their preference of a course or subjects in order to get into a college which is ranked in the top league. No wonder then that ranking of educational institutions has become an established trend in the country with a host of different lists being released mentioning top colleges in humanities, science, engineering, medical, management and law streams each year. Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) released its ranking for 2017 last week under its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The NIRF was introduced last year by MHRD. More than 3,300 institutes were assessed on as many as 20 parameters. Delhi’s Miranda House topped the list of degree colleges and Loyola College in Chennai and Shri Ram College were the second and third-best in India.

The NIRF rankings will pave the way for  government funding for institutions and the top ranking institutions will also be favourably viewed for greater autonomy and more international exposure, the government said.

Delhi’s Miranda House and Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science emerged as India’s best college and university, while Loyola College in Chennai and Shri Ram College were the second and third-best colleges in India, said the survey of “general degree” colleges by the human resource development ministry.

Though very few institutes from the region comprising Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and J&K made it to the top list, Indian Institute of Technology (Ropar) topped Punjab with overall rank of 32 followed by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Ludhiana (40), The Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research, Mohali (52), Thapar University Patiala (75) and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) Ludhiana (81).
