Chief Minister Harish Rawat has demanded Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre as compensation for demonetisation of the currency.

He expressed concern over the decline in the tourism industry after demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. He alleged that the state had suffered a loss of around Rs 700 crore in the past three weeks and the NDA government was responsible for it. He also said the government had to pay back for all losses people suffered after demonetisation.

The Chief Minister, while addressing party workers in a Jan Aakrosh rally held to protest the demonetisation here today, said, “The decision taken by the Prime Minister is just for the benefit of some corporate houses and not to remove black money. The BJP is misleading people in the name of nationalism and fight against corruption. The decision has made no impact on the generation of black money, but has created trouble for the common man. Congress workers will continue their struggle against the autocracy of the BJP government and raise the voice till the common man gets justice.”

Earlier, hundreds of Congress workers gathered at the party office in Dehradun. They took out a protest march towards Raj Bhawan under the leadership of state Congress chief Kishore Upadhyay. Hundreds of Congressmen raised slogans against the Central Government and demanded to reverse the decision of demonetisation. Later, a delegation of Congress leaders presented a memorandum of their demands to the President through Governor KK Paul.

Suryakant Dhasmana, Mathuradatt Joshi, Rajendra Shah, Prithvi Raj Chauhan and Lal Chand Sharma took part in the protest.
