As many as 277 bottles of various cough syrups and more than 21,628 capsules and tablets of sedative drugs were seized by a team of Baddi police last night from the house of a chemist at Kattiwala village near Baddi.

Jasbir Singh runs a chemist shop, Simran Medicos at Mandhala village, located near the Atal Shiksha Kunj, housing four major private universities in Baddi.

The drugs comprised cough syrups i.e. Recof and Corex and tablets and capsules included microlit, lomitil, nitrosum, corisoma, smo-proxyvon and prozolan.

SP G Shiva said the police got information that the chemist had illegally stocked sedative drugs, which were being sold to students of various institutes.

A case under Section 18 of the NDPS Act and Section 18 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act (DCA), 1940, has been registered against Jasbir, who was produced in local court today. He was remanded to four days in police custody.

Officials of the Drug Department said the seized drugs contained substances which had sedative effects and were either cough syrups or anti-diarrhoea drugs.

“These drugs fall under the stringent schedule H-1 of the DCA and cannot be sold without the prescription of a medical practitioner. The chemist is also supposed to maintain complete record of its sale and purchase as per the Act,” they said.

The police, however, found no record pertaining to their sale and purchase from the chemist.

It is worth mentioning that since the production of proxyvon had been banned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare a few years ago, but some small-scale drug manufactures manufacture the drug by affixing a name like smo-proxyvon as it is consumed in large quantities by drug addicts. Investigations are on.
