Chandigarh, January 23

A day after the death of a two-year-old girl, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today filled the pond in which the girl had died with sand.

The engineering wing of the MC today also drained out the water from the pond in the park to the adjoining vacant plot in Sector 49.

Earlier, the pond was half filled but today it was filled fully with sand.

Area councillor Heera Negi said action should be initiated against officials who did not fill the pond in 2012, when a youth had died in it. It was also the responsibility of former councillor Harphool Kalyan, the councillor said.

Negi said she would raise the issue in the MC House meeting tomorrow and ensure that the vacant plot where the water was drained out is also filled by the  owner of the land. Adequate compensation will also be sought for the family, she said.

Mayor Asha Jaswal said an inquiry had already been marked into the incident.
