Chandigarh, September 21

“Kaale Vakre”, short story collection by Canada-based writer Jarnail Singh has been selected for Dhahan Prize for Punjabi Literature 2016.

The Vancouver, British Columbia-based Dhahan Prize promotes Punjabi literature on a global scale by awarding $25,000 (around Rs15 lakh) annually to the best book of fiction published in either Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi scripts, along with two additional second prizes of $5,000 CDN (around Rs3 lakh).

The two second prizes were given to “Tassi Dharti”, a novel by Zahid Hassan and “Us Pal”, a short-story collection by Simran Dhaliwal.

“Jarnail Singh’s collection of short stories is a powerful work as it explores the experience of immigrant Punjabis in North America. It was selected by the jurors to receive the Dhahan Prize from an impressive list of submissions,” said Barj Singh Dhahan, founder of the prize.
