Rohtak, November 8

Education and sports holds the key to women's empowerment. The progress of a country is linked to the respect it accords to its women.

This was stated by renowned international cricketer from Sri Lanka Sanath Jayasuriya, who was in Rohtak to participate in a mini-marathon to spread awareness on saving the girl child organised by the IIM here today. Prof P Rameshan, IIM-Rohtak Director, was also present.

Addressing a news conference on the sidelines of the event, Jayasuriya expressed concern over the skewed sex ratio in Haryana and other parts of the country. He advocated the need for an extensive campaign to curb female foeticide and other social evils linked to it in the entire South Asia.

He also supported the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao drive initiated by the Union Government.

Replying to a question, he said efforts were being made to strengthen women cricket across the countries and continent.
