Bathinda, June 25

Kuldip Singh (35), a debt-ridden farm labourer of Atla Khurd village in Mansa district, today committed suicide by consuming poison.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) block-level president Maggar Singh said Kuldip had taken two acres of agricultural land on lease last year and sown the cotton crop, but it was destroyed by the whitefly attack.

Kuldip received compensation from the state government for the crop loss, but it proved inadequate in repaying his debts, the BKU leader added.

He is survived by wife Jaswinder Kaur, a nine-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son. The Bhikhi police handed over the labourer’s body to his family after a post-mortem examination.
