Panchkula, January 25

Sher Jawain village, which has a woman Sarpanch, have not seen the birth of a girl child in the past year during which four boys were born in the village.

The village, that falls in Morni Block, appeared to be a ‘village of males’. When a team of Chandigarh Tribune visited the village today, it came to know that it was not just Sher Jawain, but three other villages of the block also show the dark side of the region, which is known for the second best gender ratio in Haryana.

As many as 14 children were born in four villages of Morni Block in 2014 and all were boys. Not even a single girl was born in the villages of Tikri, Sher Jawain, Koti and Kathi. The gender ratio in these villages could not be calculated because there are no girls.

Though the figures with the Health Department pertained to last year, it was found that there were a few births of girl child even during the past five years in the block.

When asked the reasons for poor sex ration in the block, first, Sarpanch Punni Devi kept mum. Later, she said she tried to educate people. “What can I say? I educate people to have a girl child the way my sons have, but to no avail. I myself have a granddaughter but can’t change the mindset of others,” said Punni Devi.

Around 28 children from the village study at the government school located nearby. Of them only seven are girls.

All children up to 11 years of age from Sher Jawain village study in this school. Of them, only one five-year-old girl studies in Class I and the others in Class V.

Students said their teacher last came on January 11 to take classes.

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) said his teams were working to find the reasons for a few births of girls in the block.
