In a dowry death case, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anshu Shukla today sentenced a man to seven-year imprisonment for causing the death of his wife, Baby, and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on him.

The court had on May 19 acquitted three other accused in the case. While the court had convicted Bobby’s husband, it had acquitted her mother-in-law, her brother-in-law and his wife after the prosecution failed to prove the charges.

According to the prosecution case, the case was registered on a complaint of Rameshwar, a resident of Daddu Majra Colony. He stated that he had six sisters and the eldest one, Baby, got married on April 21, 2013, to Sumit, a resident of Mani Majra.

After a month of her marriage, Sumit’s parents started demanding dowry from  Baby’s parents. They also started beating her up regularly and tortured her. Her mother-in-law, Shanti, and brother-in-law, Amit, also started to harass her and demanded a divorce.

It was alleged that they burnt Baby alive and Sumit informed her parents on the phone. It was alleged that Sumit, his mother Shanti, his brother Amit and Amit’s wife Seema were responsible for her death.

The court convicted Sumit and acquitted Shanti, Amit and Seema.
