Playing mediator in a marital dispute proved fatal for Vidhi Chand (50), a BJP activist who headed the party’s Scheduled Caste Mandal.
Accompanied by Manjeet Kaur (52), he arrived at Bhaini Gujjaran village near Jagraon this afternoon to have a word with her husband, Jaswant Singh. An argument ensued.
In a fit of rage, Jaswant Singh, his father Dalip Singh, son-in-law Angrez Singh and two sons battered Manjeet Kaur and Vidhi Chand to death.
They have been booked for murder. While the estranged couple’s sons fled, the others stood near the victims’bodies till the arrival of the police, shocked village residents said.
Sources said Manjeet’s daughter had strained ties with her husband Angrez Singh and the latter blamed his mother-in-law for it.
Manjeet Kaur lived as a tenant in Vidhi Chand's house in Kamal Ke village near Dharamkot.
Opinder Singh Ghumman, SSP, said Manjeet Kaur, who wanted a share in her husband’s property, had approached the courts.
The postmortem would be conducted tomorrow at the Civil Hospital, Jagraon, the officer added.
