Chandigarh, January 18

The agitation being held by sanitation workers in the city turned ugly today when they poured a heap of garbage in the middle of the road leading to a government school in Sector 52 right ahead of UT Adviser Vijay Dev’s visit to the area.

As the Adviser’s official vehicle crossed the area at around 9.55 am, the officer was greeted by the litter lying on the road leading to the school. Sanitation in other parts of the city was also affected as the workers continued their strike and did not lift garbage.

The sanitation workers are demanding permanent jobs for relatives of workers who died on duty.

The UT Adviser reached the Sector 52 government school 30 minutes late than the scheduled time of 9.30 am, where he was to inaugurate a pulse polio campaign. A number of children and their parents had to wait in a queue for vaccination.

The national immunisation round was launched today and a total of 57,003 children were vaccinated. The vaccination will continue tomorrow and the day after. As many as 2,200 workers, including 15 area supervisors, 90 sector supervisors, 100 reserved workers and 105 mobile teams have been deployed by the Department of Health and Family Welfare.
