Ludhiana, March 29

While lives on roads continue to be in a vulnerable condition, the authorities concerned, including the police, seem to be unable to control the menace of rash driving and speeding vehicles.

Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycle riders, etc, are all vulnerable to road accidents.

Killed on the roadside

Little did Honey (30) know that his visit to relatives on March 26 would be his last. A “rashly-driven” vehicle had hit him while he was standing on the roadside at Chandigarh Road and fled. He died on the spot. A day before, Santokh Singh had died after he was hit by a vehicle while was crossing GT Road near Jassiyan. He was admitted to a local hospital and then referred to the PGIMER, Chandigarh. However, he succumbed to his injuries.

Pedestrians unsafe

On the evening of March 21, Prakash Kaur (80) was on way to a gurdwara in Mundian Kalan when a vehicle had hit her. The women died on the spot. On the same day, city resident Anu was killed after being hit by an autorickshaw on Gill Road. She was taken to the Civil Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Succumbed to head injuries

On March 19, Salinder Kumar Yadav was hit by a motorcycle near Pratap Chowk. He sustained injuries on head and died on the spot.

Hit while riding bicycle

On March 12, Hardeep Singh was riding his bicycle near Chhandra Basti when he was hit by a vehicle. On March 8, Dipesh Jain, an industrialist from BRS Nagar, was riding his bicycle in the morning when a truck had hit him —killing him on Canal Road. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Crushed to death by truck

Manoj Kumar died on GT Road in Dhandari Kalan area after he was hit by a speeding vehicle on March 13. The vehicle could not be identified. On March 11, Darbara Singh and Kamaljit Kaur, couple from Bhamian Kalan, were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a container-truck near Vardhaman Chowk on Chandigarh Road.

On March 7, Jaspal Singh succumbed to his injuries in a hospital after his motorcycle was hit by a truck on the Sahnewal-Kohara road. On the same morning, a man was hit by a vehicle near Gyan Nagar and was admitted to the Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

On March 6, a pedestrian crossing GT Road was crushed to death by a truck.

Several people have been crippled and disabled on the roads and several such accidents go unreported.

However, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Commissioner of Police, said the analysis of the exact causes of such incidents — rash driving, lack of self-discipline or any other — was underway and a report would be prepared soon to see what measures needed to be undertaken.
