Former Akali minister Harmail Tohra joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday, days after he accused Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal of denying him a ticket to contest elections because of “lack of money”.

Tohra, son-in-law of Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra, addressed a press conference with senior AAP leaders, among them Sanjay Singh. Jathedar Tohra's daughter Kuldeep Kaur was also present.

“I am resigning from PAC and primary membership of SAD,” Tohra, whose son Harinder Pal Singh Tohra also joined the AAP, said.

Always seen as the jathedar’s political heir, Tohra began to show signs of dissidence after former Akali rebel Satbir Singh Khattar replaced his wife as halqa in-charge of Patiala II — a segment the family has long been associated with.

On August 20, Tohra accused Badal of having denied him an opportunity to contest elections because “his family did not have enough money”.
